We are EXTREMELY proud of our teams, PHPPS and The Scratchies for their creative and original Scratch projects that saw them each beating 30 teams in the Junior Category and taking home the 2nd and 3rd prize respectively!
Code XtremeApps is an annual hackathon competition organised by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and this year, Kodecoon sent 3 teams to compete and they sure did us incredibly proud!
Held at Singapore Management University (SMU), participating teams were given 3 hours to complete a Scratch project that responds to the given challenge statement of “Making cities and communities sustainable with lesser pollution”.
Here’s what our winning teams came up with!
Our students from Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School came up with a fun and engaging Scratch game that features turtles shooting at waste – turning the endangered species into defenders of their own environment. Thereby shedding light on the impact of waste pollution and its victims in a simple but impactful game, which garnered them 2nd place!
The Scratchies, a team formed by our Kodecoon students, came in 3rd place with their innovative BBB Machine, which stands for “Bring Back plastic Bags”. This machine will encourage shoppers to reduce the usage of single-use plastic bags by – you guessed it – bringing back used plastic bags in return for eco-points and shopping vouchers!
To say that we are proud of our teams will be an understatement! It was indeed heartwarming to see the hard work put in by our students, all the brainstorming sessions and presentation preparation definitely paid off. While one of our teams that also took part in the competition did not clinch a prize, we are incredibly heartened to witness their passion and enthusiasm. Their efforts were also noticed by their parents themselves, who were kind enough to provide us with these feedback –
”We are very proud of them too and also your effort to help them through the whole journey. Glad to have you guys as their leaders and mentor in this field. Both of you have definitely put in the same or if not more than the kids themselves. The amount of sacrifices and time, as well as having hope and expectation to emerge winner. I do hope you will not be discouraged. Their performance this time round is not a true reflection of your professionalism and passion to nurture young kids. So I hope you both can continue to motivate and grow young talents similar like what you are doing now so that young families can benefit and replicate your work. Once again thank you and my heartfelt appreciations from within.”

“Vera is very motivated. She felt her learning has helped her in her DSA tests, now she is in the second round of selection. She has enjoyed herself and it also helps bring up her confidence.”

By having our students join competitions, we seek to challenge them to think and respond creatively and quickly even while under pressure. Competitions also allow them to gain practical presentation skills and boost their confidence when presenting to judges and live audiences.
If these are skills that you would also like to equip your child with, we would love to have you and your child join our Kodecoon family! To learn more about Kodecoon and how we can help your child’s coding journey, simply contact us or register for our free trial classes online!
