Dear Parents,
I recently came across a by a post by another coding school that showed a conversation between a dad and a son, which went like this:
“Dad, how do I become a millionaire?” the child asked.
“Learn coding!” the dad replied.
If you know me by now, I am not a teacher who encourages my team or students to look down upon other coding schools. I believe that each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, all are on the same mission to prepare our children for a better future.
But, this time, I feel obliged to make a comment about a post I came across.
On the surface, there is nothing wrong with this post advertisement. Let’s acknowledge that there are many coders out there who have worked hard to be a millionaire and even a billionaire.
That said, it is too misleading to tell a child that to become a millionaire is to learn coding as there are even more coders who have ended up not becoming millionaires. All because of the failure to apply their knowledge.
Parents, do not let your child learn coding for the wrong reason. They need to know that the knowledge of coding alone is useless. It will only be useful if they know how to apply it to something bigger than themselves.
If I could be the dad in the advertisement, I would first question my child’s question. I would then share with my son the difference between the pursuit of money and the pursuit of value. Value comes from your applied knowledge.
The pure pursuit of money gets you trapped while the pursuit of value liberates you.
With love,
Teacher Deddy
