Dear Parents: Chapter 4 – DSA or no DSA?

Dear Parents,

direct-school-admission

These past few weeks have been quite hectic for me. It’s the time of the year for our P5 students to consider joining our Direct School Admission (DSA) preparation class. I found myself jumping from call to call with both parents and students, sometimes even till late at night.

When it comes to DSA, my first question is always the same. It is not “which schools are you looking at” or “which talent are you applying for”. Instead, I always ask,

“Mummy/Daddy, does your child really need to go through DSA at all?”

Such a question often surprises parents. One even asked me, “Why is Kodecoon so different? Why are you so honest?”. I was puzzled.

She explained that others would have bombarded her with various holiday camps and programmes for her child to join in order to increase the chances of getting accepted via DSA, but here I am questioning her on the most basic yet important question.

While I am grateful that 11 out of 12 students secured their DSA confirmed offers, having gone through the journey with them, I know that the process is not easy.

However, DSA provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their entire coding journey. The preparation also encourages them to think about their future and to learn more about the schools that would guide and support them towards their dreams. It also gives students clarity on what they want to pursue in secondary school.

Mummy/Daddy, if this is what you want your child to learn and experience, then the answer to the most important DSA question is a “Yes”.

With love,

Teacher Deddy
