Kodecoon Academy students achieved outstanding results at the Hwa Chong Info-communications Challenge (HCIC) 2026, earning 23 medals across the Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Award categories.
Every award represents a result, but behind every result is a much bigger story. There were challenging Python questions, mistakes that had to be understood, timed practices that tested students’ focus and moments when giving up might have felt easier than trying again. Through it all, our Kodecoon Academy students continued learning, practising and pushing themselves beyond what they thought they could do. Their perseverance paid off at the Hwa Chong Info-communications Challenge (HCIC) 2026, where Kodecoon students earned an outstanding 23 medals, comprising 4 Platinum, 7 Gold, 9 Silver and 3 Bronze Awards.
We are incredibly proud of every student who stepped forward to represent their school, challenge their programming abilities and experience one of Singapore’s recognised coding competitions for primary school students.
What Is the Hwa Chong Info-communications Challenge (HCIC) 2026?
The Hwa Chong Info-communications Challenge, commonly known as HCIC, is organised by Hwa Chong Institution to develop greater interest in info-communications among primary school students.
The competition gives young learners an opportunity to explore and demonstrate their abilities in programming logic, Python programming and robotics knowledge, while strengthening important skills such as computational thinking and analytical thinking. Bronze Awards: 3 (Samuel Chun Tak Syun, Frederick Chan Rui Jie, Wong Zen Yu)
At HCIC 2026, 23 Kodecoon Academy students received Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards. Cumulatively, Kodecoon students have earned 11 Platinum, 22 Gold, 21 Silver and 18 Bronze Awards, bringing our overall achievement to 72 awards at the Hwa Chong Info-communications Challenge.
While we are thrilled by these results, we are equally proud of every Kodecoon student who participated. Choosing to enter a coding competition requires courage, discipline and a willingness to be challenged. Each student gained valuable experience that can support their continued development in coding and technology.
How Kodecoon Prepares Students for HCIC
Before the competition, students strengthened their Python programming, computational thinking and problem-solving skills through structured practice. Kodecoon’s HCIC preparation programme also helps students become familiar with timed questions, unfamiliar problem formats and the pressure of a competition environment.

Q: What topics and skills are tested in HCIC?
Teacher Deddy: HCIC assesses more than a student’s ability to write code. The competition may include programming, logical problem-solving, robotics and selected microcontroller concepts. Students may be required to analyse a problem, identify the correct steps and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar questions. This means they need to understand the concepts behind their solutions instead of simply memorising code. The competition also tests important skills such as accuracy, computational thinking, time management and the ability to remain calm when facing challenging questions. During the preparation programme, we help students strengthen these areas and become more confident in applying their knowledge independently
Q: Can an HCIC award help students interested in DSA through coding or technology?
Teacher Deddy: Yes, an HCIC award can strengthen a student’s coding portfolio by showing their interest, effort and achievement in programming. It can help students stand out, especially when supported by coding projects, competition experience and a strong understanding of what they have learned. However, each school has its own DSA selection process, so students should continue building a well-rounded portfolio and be prepared to explain their skills during interviews or assessments.
Q: How can parents tell whether HCIC is suitable for their child?
Teacher Deddy: HCIC may be suitable for students who have developed a basic coding foundation and are interested in challenging themselves through logical and programming-based problems. Before recommending the HCIC preparation programme, we assess the student’s current coding level, problem-solving approach and learning needs. This helps us determine whether the competition pathway is appropriate and which skills should be strengthened.
Q: What advice would you give parents who are considering Kodecoon’s HCIC preparation programme for their child?
Teacher Deddy: I would encourage parents to see HCIC as a valuable opportunity for their child to challenge themselves, deepen their coding knowledge and grow in confidence. Throughout the preparation journey, students can strengthen their perseverance, time management and independent problem-solving skills. Parents can support their child by encouraging consistent practice, recognising their progress and allowing them to learn from mistakes. With the right guidance and support, HCIC can be a meaningful and rewarding learning experience.
